This year for a change from the more traditional summer destination of the Algarve, we decided to visit the north of Portugal.
We booked to stay in Viana do Castelo, an elegant seaside resort situated at the mouth of the River Lima. It is 1/2 hr from Porto and only 3.5hrs from Lisbon. Santiago de Compostela is only 2hrs drive away, which is ideal for a day trip.
Set high in the hills overlooking the town is the Basilica de Santa Luzia and just behind it is the Pousada Viana do Castelo a very elegant hotel. Our room had stunning views of the city, the estuary and far beyond. I think on a clear day you could possibly see Porto!
We had a lovely time, food and drinks are definitely not to be missed and neither is the white port!! Synonymous with Portugal!!
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it as a different type of holiday away from the madding crowd.
One thing that struck us most is how clean the place is and how friendly the people are.
